Bleed 3D

[Victoria Cross, 1997, cow’s blood, 10” x 12” (25cm x 30cm)]

A vegan and his vegetarian kid walk into a slaughterhouse… So began a challenging series of works in which William tried to use the process for the 3D acrylic pieces, but with blood instead of paint. Fortunately for the faint of heart, I do not have many images of the results.

The process for this one went something like:

  1. Go to the slaughterhouse and bring your kid in the hopes of terrorizing them into being a lifelong vegan or vegetarian (sorry, didn’t stick).

  2. Get two massive vats of blood from a confused slaughterhouse employee and seat belt them into the beige velour sofa that is the backseat of your ancient Pontiac Parisienne. Drive home very slowly.

  3. Try to pour a thick layer on glass to dry it. Doesn’t work. Coagulates grossly.

  4. Discover cat really likes this new medium you’re working with.

  5. Wash cat.

  6. Try freezing, baking, shaking, mixing with acrylic…none quite as anticipated.

  7. Be absolutely certain that your kid will not invite any friends over for the duration of this experiment.

All was not lost though as in addition to the Victoria Cross war medal made of blood, above, one other piece did work out from this process. This pile of blood dust:
